Wines & Spirits

8 December 2023 On this date the changes to labelling rules for wines and aromatised wines will become effective. Producers will then have to provide the list of ingredients and nutritional information for their products.

For example, the new directive stipulates that producers must indicate that a wine contains sulphites if quantities exceed 10 mg/L. It is important to note several other substantial changes related to mandatory information.

The significant new changes

  • Information on the health risks associated with alcohol consumption and assistance in finding relevant information in each country.
  • Recommendations on responsible consumption issued by each country, including instructions from health authorities on maximum alcohol consumption levels which must not be exceeded, individuals who must not consume alcohol, and a link to a consumer information website.
  • Under certain conditions, this information may be provided on an electronic or e-label. However, even if the operator chooses to indicate the list of ingredients on an e-label, they are still required to list any allergenic substances on the physical label. If the nutritional information is provided via an e-label, the operator must still provide the energy value of 100 ml of wine or aromatised wine on the bottle’s physical label. The operator may also choose to display the ingredients and nutrition declaration on the packaging or a label attached to it.

There are therefore no exemptions. Compliance will be a prerequisite for marketing products in France and throughout the European Union. Stakeholders must therefore take a wide range of parameters into account to ensure that the entire production chain is compliant with European regulations.
